Welcome to my Sketchbook
I didn’t know what to write for my next post, so here I am compiling my favorite sketches over the past few years as a source of drawing inspo. I’ve been in an art funk all year, so maybe, just maybe, this will spark up some motivation. If the gears don’t start turning for me, maybe they will for whoever’s viewing. Personally, it takes some momentum to be all in on something, so let this be a bit of your momentum. Amen.
1. Couple Drawing
I remember what led up to this drawing. One second, I was building up my art board on Pinterest (my main source of drawing inspo); the next second, I was referencing this photo I came across. I found the picture to be pretty cute, simple, and something that would pose a challenge for me. Illustrating humans and their proportions has always been a challenge for me, and this drawing actually sent me down a rabbit hole of improving my proportions, and I’d say it worked.
2. Random Sketches #1
Like most artists, I self-insert, and honestly, I think this sketch is just me as a man. Like full-blown. Someone once told me I tend to draw myself, and once I realized that, everything is just… me. Ignore the little sketches below, unless you find them jaw-droppingly gorgeous and intricate. I was just bored.
3. Kitty Cat
This was the sketch/outline for an art project. We were to create a piece in our chosen medium, and I chose oil painting. The painting isn’t my best work, so it’s not linked along with this draft. However, my former art teacher still has it, so maybe the painting was better than I thought. To refocus on the actual drawing, I love it. It’s not A1 realism, but for someone with a history of sh*t proportioning, it’s pretty good.
4. Screaming Heads
If you go through drawing tags on any social media, you’ve seen something similar. It’s a fun concept: bunched-up heads with different expressions. It can be interpreted as pretty emotional, and at the time, I probably was emotional, so it’s fitting at least. Like the previous sketch, it was for another art project—thank you, Ms. Hampton—one that features a few more illustrations, but I’ll need more content to write in the future, so I’ll hold off on that for now.
5. Simple Butterfly
There’s nothing interesting to say about this but surely, it’s a good example of simple drawing inspo. I drew it around 2022-ish, out of pure boredom. I don’t even like butterflies. They’re terrifying.
6. GRILLZ
I LOVE THIS DRAWING. I love Grillz and the culture behind them—very, very beautiful. Genuinely, I had so much fun drawing this, and it being unfinished is what I like about it. As I mentioned, I’ve had doubts about drawing people, but I impressed myself. Funny enough, my family thought it was a clown at first glance, which should say a lot about them, but I love it.
7. Tropical Flower
I’ve always loved drawing flowers. It was a great pastime all throughout grade school, and it’s just easy to do. A year or so back, I had an obsession with tropical flowers, such as plumerias (or frangipanis) and hibiscus flowers. This drawing was a direct product of that. Gorgeous, gorgeous flowers they are.
Out of every drawing I’ve shared online, this one in particular has been gaining lots of traction on Pinterest. I’ve even had random users remake my drawing, commenting on it under the post. It certainly feels good to know that your art is being perceived as drawing inspo, that even strangers like and appreciate.
8. Fruit Bowl
[TW: SCHOOL PROJECT MENTION] Another sketch made for an art project. I got a 100 if you couldn’t tell. Anyway, we made paper sculptures based on our sketches, and, again, my former art teacher (Mr. Johnson, not Ms. Hampton) still holds the final piece in his classroom. You could say, I’m a modern-day Michelangelo.
9. Seashells on the Seashore
[TW: THE 100th SCHOOL PROJECT MENTION] More drawings made for school projects. This was the sketch for our printmaking. I believe the method/media we used is called lino cutting/lino printing or an engraving of some sort; either way, it was fun. Unlike the past projects I mentioned, I do have the final pieces, as well as the blocks we used when making it.
Printmaking was just about the most fun I’ve ever had in any art class. (Another shoutout to Ms. Hampton!) I recommend trying out printmaking, specifically lino cutting/lino printing, for anyone and everyone who likes art and a bit of a challenge. 10/10, would do it again!
(P.S. (thank you, beach, for the drawing inspo!)
10. Dj
I drew this with the intention of a painting for my dad coming from it. In fact, I was supposed to be making paintings for a handful of people, and well, that never happened. (Sorry, I love you guys though!) That left me with a bunch of sketches dedicated to them, and this is one for my dad. While he no longer DJs full-time, music has always been a passion of his, and he still produces today. Overall, I just like the simplicity of the drawing, and it’s full of love. Shoutout to DJ Smoov Beatz!
11. Cup and Bowl Values
[TW: FINAL SCHOOL PROJECT MENTION] My last sketch of the post and the last one for a school project. This was a graded assignment for the values portion of the course, and I aced it, per usual. I can confidently say I gained something from that class—techniques, and tips I’m sure to take throughout the rest of my artistic life. (Last shoutout to Mr. Johnson!)
Thank you for making it to the end of this blog post! This might’ve been a bit boring if you’re weird and hate art, or if you’ve already seen these pieces time and time again. Anyway, I hope this inspired someone—actually, I know it did.
Beautifully written and thanks for the inspo…as I too consider myself a ‘creative’💚!
